Wieliszewo

Wieliszewo ( German Velsow ) is a village in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship and is part of the rural community Potegowo ( Pottangow ) in the powiat Słupski ( Stolp ).

Geographical Location and Transport

Wieliszewo located in Pomerania, about 23 kilometers southeast of the county town of Slupsk ( Stolp ) on a side road that connects the villages of Karznica (Wendish Karstnitz ) and Łabiszewo ( Lasbüssow ) together. The province road 211 leads past the northeastern city limits. The nearest train station is nine kilometers away Strzyżyno Słupskie ( Stresow ) to the state railway line 202 of Stargard to Gdansk. Until 1945 there was also following the Stolpe Valley Railway with station Dübsow (now Polish: Dobieszewo ).

Place name

Earlier forms of the name are: Felsow, Velstow, Vilsow and Vilstow.

History

As an independent location, there is the former Velsow only since 1830, because before it was a Vorwerk of Wendish Karstnitz ( 1938-45 Ramnitz, today Polish: Karznica ). 1830 Velsow in the possession of those of Krockow, after which it came into the possession of the von Wedel. In 1862 it was sold to the Amtsrat Alexander von Livonius, after it took over his son Artur. Last owner was Engelhard Lehmann. Then Velsow was settled.

In 1910 Velsow had 236 inhabitants. Their number was 1933 already 256, and rose to 1939 on 264

By 1945 Velsow was a municipality in the district of Stolp in Pomerania Region of the Prussian province of Pomerania. It was incorporated into the official and the civil registry district Wendish Karstnitz or Ramnitz ( Karznica ) and belonged to the district court district of Stolp. Last community leaders (from 1923) and mayor ( as of 1935 ) was at first took office only 28 - year-old farmer Willy Lawrenz.

Towards the end of World War II Velsow was occupied on March 8, 1945 by Soviet troops. In Velsow a headquarters was built. When the troops left the village in late 1945, it took possession of Poland and took possession of the houses and farmsteads. Velsow was renamed Wieliszewo. The population was deported. The expulsion of the first families on July 1, 1946. In December 1946 185 people were expelled from Velsow. Then, in the spring of 1947 there was a further eviction action.

35 expelled from Velsow villagers were later identified in the Federal Republic of Germany and 146 in East Germany.

The village is today a district of Gmina Potegowo in powiat Słupski in the Pomeranian Voivodeship ( 1975-1998 Slupsk voivodship ). Here are now registered 202 inhabitants.

Church

Before 1945, the population of Velsow almost exclusively Protestant denomination was. The village was in the parish Lupow (now Polish: Łupawa ) incorporated the Church of the Old Prussian Union Church Stolp -Altstadt Ostsprengel in the ecclesiastical province of Pomerania. Last German clergyman was Pfarrar Gerhard Gehlhoff.

Since 1945, the population of Wieliszewo is predominantly Catholic. Binding to the former vicarage persists, however, the parish Łupawa heard ( Lupow ) now for the newly formed Office of the Dean Łupawa in the diocese Pelplin of the Catholic Church in Poland. Here surviving Protestant church members are the parish in the Cross parish in Slupsk ( Stolp ) in the Diocese of Pomerania - Greater Poland the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland.

School

Velsow before 1945 had a single-level elementary school. Here a teacher taught 49 school children. Last German teacher was Friedrich Frautnick.
