At the Externsteinen the Wiembecke is dammed to form a pond. The Wiembecke rises on the northern edge of the Teutoburg Forest, which is part of the Rhine -Weser watershed. Environment

Water quality

The Wiembecke will be charged the full course as critical or heavily soiled grade II-III to III assigned. The waters will be affected except through its tributaries and diffuse pollutants by wastewater from the wastewater treatment plant Horn. To protect horn Oldendorf, Heiligenkirchen and Detmold against floods, a flood retention basin between the horn and horn Oldendorf is planned.

Fish kills

In 2004 there was a fish kill in the Wiembecke. It was caused by discharged extinguishing water in combating a smoldering of wood waste at the site of a wood- processing company in Horn.
