Wihr-au-Val

Wihr -au -Val (Alsatian Wihr Dal, German Weier in the valley ) is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace with 1272 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It belongs to the district of Colmar, in the canton of Munster and the community association Vallée de Munster.

Geography

The community Wihr -au -Val is located about twelve kilometers west-southwest of Colmar on the fencing. The Fechttal in the Vosges is also known as Munster ( after the city of Munster above Wihr -au -Val ). The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

About two-thirds of its territory is covered by forest. They extend both sides of the fencing on the slopes and on the up to 960 m reach altitudes.

Neighboring communities of Wihr -au -Val are Labaroche in the north, Walbach in the northeast, Wintzenheim in the east, Vœgtlinshoffen the southeast, Soultzbach- les- Bains in the south, Griesbach -au -Val in the southwest, Gunsbach in the west and Orbey in the northwest ( point of contact ).

History

To 896 the place was called Bonifacii Villare, named after a villa of the Alsatian Duke Boniface.

In Wihr -au -Val, tourism plays an important role. There are several hotels and restaurants. Among the attractions of the place is one of the city gate la Porte de fortifiée Wihr -au -Val.
