Wilbur Sweatman

Wilbur C. Sweatman ( born February 7, 1882 in Brunswick, Missouri; † March 9, 1961 in New York) was one of the first clarinetist and bandleader of the jazz.

Life and work

Wilbur Sweatman started his musical career in a circus band before his so-called pseudo Symphony Orchestras and dance bands led by 1902. First Sweat 's band was a ragtime band. However, with the advent of jazz, he was able to change the repertoire and playing style. He was probably the first African-American bandleader of the jazz, of the recordings were made.

Significantly, he is the lasting impression that he and his band left the youthful Duke Ellington. Sweatman order has been practically a model for the later largest of all big band leader of jazz. With feats like the game on three clarinets at once he was probably also a role model for Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
