Wilfried Nelissen

Wilfried Nelissen ( born May 5, 1970 in Tongeren ) is a former Belgian cyclist.

Wilfried Nelissen was a professional racing driver from 1991 to 1998 and was able to achieve 68 wins in that time. In 1986 he became Belgian champion youth on the street, he could repeat as amateur as well as 1994 and 1995 as a professional in 1990. Further victories reach him in 1991 at the Tour de Picardie 1992 Paris - Bourges, in 1993 and 1994 at Omloop Het Volk and 1996 at the Clasica de Almeria. Four times - 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 - Nelissen took part in the Tour de France. In 1993, he won his participation in the second stage and wore the yellow jersey for two days.

During his tour starting in 1994 Nelissen crashed heavily when he crashed in a bunch sprint on a photographed police officers; also the French rider Laurent Jalabert following him and other drivers were involved in this crash. At Gent- Wevelgem 1997, he crashed again, only to hit a wooden road sign, and he retired to multiple fractures. As a result of these injuries, he had to quit two years later his cycling career.

From 2000 to 2006 Wilfried Nelissen was known for his witty and entertaining way, sports director of the semi-professional teams, " Tongers " from Limburg. He then started his own business with a courier service.
