Wilhelm Busch Museum

The Wilhelm Busch - German Museum of Caricature and Drawings is located in Hannover. The museum is housed in the Palais George, a erbautem 1780 Palais in George Garden. Of the Museum is the Wilhelm -Busch -Gesellschaft.

Establishment and description

The foundation of the museum dates back to 1937 when the 1930 launched Wilhelm -Busch -Gesellschaft in Hanover city center, opened the first museum of the Lower Saxon artist Wilhelm Busch.

Co-founder of the Wilhelm -Busch -Gesellschaft and first director of the museum in 1937, the passionate collector Emil Conrad.

But the time of National Socialism interpreted Wilhelm Busch from the perspective of the so-called " ethnic movement ": the temporary archivist of the Wilhelm Busch Museum, Karl -up published, about 1939 members of the Books Gutenberg his work The philosopher of Wiedensahl. The museum is supported by the Wilhelm -Busch -Gesellschaft. Today belong to it (2010) around 2500 members at home and abroad. Since 2002, the Museum is supported by the Association of Friends and Sponsors. The city of Hanover, which provides the building with showrooms in historic architecture free of charge, granted an annual amount of support the museum. Since the summer of 2000, the museum after extensive renovation in conjunction with the newly designed Palaisgarten a volunteer -run café for visitors.

Regularly the house is cooperating with the resident of Linden-Nord letterpress museum.

Stock

The museum has a unique collection of Wilhelm Busch and an internationally important collection of satirical art from four centuries with works by artists such as William Hogarth, James Gillray, Francisco de Goya and Honoré Daumier and Thomas Theodor Heine, A. Paul Weber, Tomi Ungerer, Jean -Jacques Sempé and Ronald Searle. Since about the year 2000 has seen significant and substantial increases in the collection, including one on 700 leaves counting collection of Napoleon caricatures the work of Austrian cartoonist Erich Sokol, the estates of the artist Volker Kriegel and Friedrich Karl Waechter and the visual arts work of the writer Günter Kunert.

Exhibitions

In the museum there are regular, usually in dreimonatlichem rhythm, exhibitions of historical and contemporary cartoons and critical graphics, cartoons and comics. Many exhibitions are variously but also passed mainly in connection to other museums in the German speaking European countries.

The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions on the subject of caricature and critical graphics. Since 1950, major artists were presented in comprehensive retrospectives in around 150 exhibitions. Were shown, among other works of William Hogarth, Honoré Daumier, Grandville, Winsor McCay, Carl Barks, Walt Disney, Hergé, Tomi Ungerer, Paul Flora, Ronald Searle, Manfred Deix, Gottfried Helnwein, Roland Topor, Wolf -Rüdiger Marunde and Frederick Charles Waechter.
