Wilhelm Uhthoff

Wilhelm Uhthoff ( born July 31, 1853 in Klein- Warin, Mecklenburg, † March 21, 1927 in Breslau) was a German ophthalmologist and high school teachers.

Biography

Uhthoff studied medicine from 1873 at the Eberhard -Karls- University Tübingen, Georg-August -Universität Göttingen, the University of Rostock and the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. He received his Ph.D. in 1877 in Berlin as MD and turned to ophthalmology. After gaining his license, he was an assistant to Heinrich Leopold Schoelerpark 1878 in Berlin. With him he habilitated in 1885. 1890 he was appointed to the University of Marburg to the chair of ophthalmology and was succeeded Hermann Schmidt Rimpler ( 1838-1915 ). In 1896, he joined as the successor of Richard Forester on the Breslauer Chair. In the academic year 1908/ 09 he was rector of the university. In 1923 he became Professor Emeritus.

Work

Uhthoff dealt mainly with the relationship of eye diseases and other diseases, focusing on nervous diseases and poisoning. So he described in 1890 for the first time that occurs after physical exertion temporary worsening of visual acuity in patients with multiple sclerosis. Today, a deterioration in the condition of patients with demyelinating diseases due to heat or exertion is called Uhthoff 's phenomenon.
