Willem Frederiksz van Royen

Willem Frederik van Royen (* 1645 in Haarlem, † 1723 in Berlin ) was a Dutch painter.

He was probably born in Haarlem and was a student of Arnold van Ravesteyn from about 1661 to 1668. He painted still lifes and flowers and went in 1669 to Berlin, where he court painter to the Elector Frederick William to succeed the flowers painter Adriaen van der Spelt, which in the Netherlands returned. From 1689 he was in Potsdam. He was in 1696 one of the founders of the Berlin Academy of Arts.

He should not Willem van Royen (1672-1742) to be confused with the painter and draftsman in Amsterdam, the birds usually painted.
