Willem Hesselink

Willem Hesselink ( born February 8, 1878 in Arnhem, † 15 December 1973) was a Dutch football player. He played one match for the Dutch national football team, scoring one goal.

Biography

In 1892, Hesselink with his brother Jan and some friends the club Vitesse Arnhem in his hometown. Cricket, football, athletics and tug of war practiced Hesselink - and could have with some success: Over the miles he put a Dutch national record on; his Dutch record of 6.20 meters in the long jump, erected in 1898, remained composed twelve years in the tug of war he was Dutch champion with his team. As a football player he was usually to be found in the center forward position but also played in midfield or in defense. He studied chemistry in Leiden; During this time he was active from 1899 to 1901 at HVV Den Haag, with which he was twice Dutch master. He also played several times in the Bondselftal, an unofficial predecessor of the national team.

Because of his studies, he went in 1902 to Munich, where he founded two years earlier the FC Bayern joined. Since he was one of the best players in the club, they asked him to perform well as coach. As the first president of the club, John Franz, left the club, he also took over the office which he held from 1903 to 1905. In addition, Hesselink had time to complete his chemistry studies and a study of philosophy with a doctorate. He then returned to Vitesse.

A little later he was in the squad of the new national team and played in the second game of the KNVB selection on May 14, 1905 in Rotterdam against Belgium. 30,000 spectators, he scored in the 74th minute the late ahead 1-0. As a chemist, he worked in the Forensic Science and became an expert on blood analysis, fingerprints and signature comparisons.
