William Bullock (collector)

William Bullock (* 1773, † 1849) was an English naturalist and author, whose son natural history studied with Ferdinand Deppe in Mexico, as well as collectors, museum founder and antique dealers.

Bullock was originally a goldsmith and jeweler. In 1790 he founded a natural history museum in Sheffield. In 1801 he moved to Liverpool this, in 1809 he went to London. 1808/1809 he wrote a catalog of his collection, of which dated several exhibits from the expeditions of Captain James Cook. Since 1812, he showed his collection in the built for him by the architect John Papworth Buonarroti exhibition hall, the Egyptian Hall. Bullock's collection included about 32,000 objects and illustrated through the presentation of 3,000 bird species in dioramas their lifestyle and eating habits. The 1819 collection auctioned is lost except for parts purchased by the British Museum at the auction Mexico collection.

1822 Bullock traveled to Mexico, where he speculated in silver mining. From this trip he brought many new artifacts and specimens, with whom he established a new exhibition at the after 1819 converted into an exhibition hall Egyptian Hall. Another trip took him to Mexico in 1827 and in the United States. There he acquired land on the Ohio River on the territory of the present town of Ludlow, Kentucky to build a utopian settlement called Hygeia (Greek for health), designed by Papworth, Papworth also had the Egyptian Hall planned. This plan was not a success, a few plots were sold, among others, the English writer Frances Trollope. 1846 Bullock sold the land to Israel Ludlow, according to which the present town is named.
