William Copeland Borlase

William Copeland Borlase (* 1848 in Penzance, † March 31, 1899 in London ) was an English antiquary and Member of Parliament ( MP) in the House of Commons.

Life and work

Borlase came from an old Cornish family who could trace their ancestry back to the time of the Norman conquest of England in 1066 by William I.. The French ancestors were originally called Taillefer, but called themselves as was customary after the area in which they settled in Cornwall, borlas. His great- great-grandfather was the famous naturalist William Borlase.

Borlase first attended school in Winchester and later studied at Trinity College, Oxford, where he graduated as Master of Arts. In his younger years he worked as his ancestor William Borlase of Prehistory and Early History of the county of Cornwall and visited many prehistoric sites, which had already described the elder Borlase. In 1863 he supervised the excavation of newly discovered prehistoric settlement Carn Euny and manufactured to a report on excavation. The etchings depicted there created John Thomas Blight. 1870 by Borlase the stone grave of Carn expose Gluze. In the following years he published numerous works on prehistoric cultures in Cornwall and Ireland, and was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

In 1880 he was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the district of St Austell in Cornwall in the House of Commons. In 1886 he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Local Government Board. In the following years, Borlase indebted because of its monetary intense life change. The disclosure of his debt through his Portuguese mistress caused a scandal, after which disinherited by his family. Borlase died at age 51 in London.
