William Forsyth Sharpe

William Forsyth Sharpe ( born June 16, 1934 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States) is an American economist.

Sharpe was 1961-1968 university professor at the University of Washington in Seattle and from 1970 until his retirement in 1989 at Stanford University 's Graduate School of Business.

Research

William F. Sharpe received in 1990 together with Merton H. Miller and Harry M. Markowitz, the price of Economics at the Swedish Riksbank in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his research in the field of pricing theory in the capital market. Prof. Dr. Sharpe is one of the founders of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM ), one of the most important capital market equilibrium models under uncertainty, the Sharpe ratio, an indicator for measuring the risk-return relationship developed (performance) of investments, the binomial method to price options, the gradient method for optimization of asset ( ie, the practical implementation of the findings from the portfolio theory ), as well as the return -based analysis for evaluating the style and performance of investment funds.

Books and Publications

William F. Sharpe wrote six books. Among his most famous works include Portfolio Theory and Capital Markets ( McGraw -Hill, 1970 and 2000 ), Asset Allocation Tools ( Scientific Press, 1987), Fundamentals of Investments (with Gordon J. Alexander and Jeffrey Bailey, Prentice- Hall, 2000) and Investments ( with Gordon J. Alexander also jointly and Jeffrey Bailey, Prentice- Hall, 1999). His latest work is Investors and Markets: Portfolio Choices, Asset Prices and Investment Advice ( Princeton University Press, 2007).

In addition, he has published numerous articles in prestigious economic journals, including Management Science, The Journal of Business, The Journal of Finance, The Journal of Financial Economics, The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, The Journal of Portfolio Management, as well as of The Financial Analysts 'Journal.

Other merits

Furthermore, Sharpe former president of the American Finance Association. He is a manager of the AXA Rosenberg Investment Fund and a member of the Board of Financial Engines, Inc.

Degrees

William F. Sharpe was awarded the title Ph.D., M. A. and B. A. in economics from the University of California in Los Angeles. His other titles are Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa from DePaul University, a doctorate Honoris Causa of the University of Alicante (Spain) and the UCLA Medal, the highest award of UCLA.
