William Ged

William Ged (* 1690 in Edinburgh, † October 19, 1749 ) was a Scottish inventor.

Life

1725 he patented his process for stereotypy. He had soldered together the types of the Dutchman J. van der Mey (father of the famous painter ).

After using book printers in Edinburgh could not convince them, he went into a partnership with the booksellers Jenner and Thomas James. From the University of Cambridge, he was commissioned to print Bibles and prayer books, but this was prevented by intrigue. In 1736 he completed a Sallust. Andrew Wilson, the printer of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope perfected his invention.
