William Gibson (ice hockey)

William James " Billy" Gibson ( born April 22, 1927 in Merritt, British Columbia; † August 29, 2006 in Lethbridge, Alberta) was a Canadian ice hockey player. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1952 he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

William Gibson began his career as a hockey player with the Lethbridge Native Sons, for which he spent a year as active in the Alberta Junior Hockey League South. From 1947 to 1951, the striker for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs played in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. With the Lethbridge Maple Leafs in 1951, he represented Canada at the World Championships. He was then obliged by the Edmonton Mercurys, with whom in 1952 he represented his country at the Olympic Winter Games. A year after the tournament, he returned for the season 1953/54, back to the Lethbridge Native Sons who entered in the meantime in the Alberta -Montana Intermediate Hockey League. In the season 1958/59 he was shortly player-manager of the Lethbridge Maple Leafs. After the end of his career he worked in Hockey Lethbridge as a car salesman.

Internationally

For Canada, Gibson participated in the Olympic Winter Games in 1952 in part in Oslo, where he won the gold medal with his team. In eight games, he scored 22 points scorer, including 15 goals. Previously, he had already won at the World Championships in 1951 with his team the gold medal.
