William H. Pauley III

William H. Pauley III (* 1952 in Glen Cove, New York) is an American federal judge.

Career

Born in Glen Cove received Pauley 1974 Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University in 1977 and Juris Doctor from the Duke University School of Law. From 1977 to 1978 he worked as a legal clerkship (law ​​clerk ) at the Office of the Nassau County Attorney in New York. In 1978 he was deputy county attorney there. From 1978 to 1998 he had his own law firm in New York City and served since 1984 as an opposition leader in the New York State Assembly.

Pauley is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He was nominated by President Bill Clinton for the vacant seat of Peter K. Leisure on 21 May 1998. On 21 October, he was confirmed by the Senate.

In 2009, Pauley ruled in the case of Ben -Ami Kadish, that a prison sentence for such an old man would not serve its purpose and took him instead fined over $ 50,000. Kadish had pleaded guilty in December 2008 to have passed secret military documents to an Israeli agent in the 1980s. In addition, he gained notoriety when he ruled on December 27, 2013, that the massive collection of traffic data in the United States of incoming and outgoing calls is constitutional by the NSA.
