William H. Wells

William Hill Wells ( born January 7, 1769 in Burlington, New Jersey, † March 11, 1829 in Dagsboro, Delaware ) was an American politician of the Federalist Party. From 1799 to 1804 and from 1813 to 1817 he sat for the U.S. state of Delaware in the U.S. Senate.

Early life and family

Wells was born in Burlington, New Jersey. In childhood, his family moved to Delaware. His father was in Dagsboro, where the family settled, soon became very successful in trading. First, he took over his father's business, but later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1791. With our own firm, he started his own business in Georgetown.

Wells was married to Rachael Dagworthy.

Political career

Politically Wells began at the level of the state. He was from 1795 to 1799 a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware. After the death of Joshua Clayton Wells was sent to Delaware in the Senate. Shortly before the end of the legislature Wells resigned from his post and went to Pennsylvania to have a go in the oil business. After almost seven years of success, he returned in 1811 back to Delaware. 1811 and 1812 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware, then in 1813 the State Senate. Following the resignation of James A. Bayard senior Wells in 1813 was sent again in the federal Senate and stayed this time until the end of the legislature in 1817 a member. In 1819 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware.

During his political career, he still pursued his law firm in Dagsboro. After retirement from politics he was able to concentrate fully on his office again.

Death

Wells died in 1829 in his hometown. He was buried at the Prince George's Churchyard in Dagsboro.
