William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton

William Alexander Anthony Douglas - Hamilton ( born February 19, 1811 in London, † July 15, 1863 in Paris) was a Scottish nobleman, the 11th Duke of Hamilton ( Duke of Hamilton) and 8th Duke of Brandon

William Hamilton was the son of Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Susan Beckford, a daughter of writer William Beckford. He succeeded his father as 11th Duke of Hamilton in 1852.

William was educated at Eton College and Oxford University. From 1833 to 1835 he was, like his father, Grand Master of Masons in Scotland. He held the office of Knight Marischal of Scotland, and the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, however, interested in hardly for British politics. In 1853 he sold his estates in Lancashire for 329 800 pounds.

The Duke married on 23 February 1843, in Mannheim Marie Amelie ( 1817-1888 ), daughter of Grand Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Baden and his wife Stéphanie de Beauharnais. The couple had the following children:

  • William (1845-1895), 12th Duke of Hamilton
  • Charles George (1847-1886), 7th Earl of Selkirk
  • Mary Victoria Hamilton (1850-1922), married his first wife in 1869 Prince Albert I of Monaco ( and thus great-grandmother of Prince Albert II ), then in a second marriage in 1880 Prince Tassilo Festetics of Tolna
