William Hartston

William Roland Hartston ( born August 12, 1947 in London ) is an English chess player.

William Hartston was awarded by the FIDE International Master title in 1973. He won the British Championship 1973 ( after Tie with Michael Basman ) and 1975. He played for the England team at the Chess Olympiads Havana in 1966, Siegen 1970, Skopje 1972, Nice 1974.

William was at times married to the chess grandmaster Jana Bellin.

Tournament successes

  • Hastings 1972/73: 3rd place
  • Sarajevo 1976: 1st Place

Hartston also worked as a chess journalist, among others, for the BBC and has written numerous chess books.
