William Hemsley (botanist)

William Botting Hemsley ( born December 29, 1843 in East Hoathly, Sussex; † October 7, 1924 in Broadstairs, Kent ) was an English botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hemsl. ".

Hemsley worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. In 1889 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society. He worked at the factory Illustrations of the New Zealand flora by Thomas Frederick Cheeseman with. For the Flora of Tropical Africa by Daniel Oliver, he edited the parts " Rhamneae " ( in Volume 1 ), " Campanulaceae " ( in Volume 3 ), " Scrophulariaceae " ( volume 4 ) and " Balanophoreae " ( in Volume 6).

The plant genus Hemsleya Cogn. from the gourd family ( Cucurbitaceae ) has been named after him.
