William Lashly
William Lashly ( born December 25 1867 in Hambledon, Hampshire, England; † 12 June 1940 ) was a British polar explorer.
Life
Lashly went up to his 13 years to school before he was first with his father as a roofer and later worked as a civil servant. After he had joined the Royal Navy in 1889, where he eventually served as chief stoker on HMS Duke of Wellington, he took to Robert Falcon Scott's first Antarctic voyage, the Discovery Expedition ( 1901-1904 ), part. During this research trip Lashly was involved in several exploration marches in the target area.
After he, Osborne was in the meantime as an instructor at the Royal Naval College had worked, he also took part in Scott's Terra Nova expedition. There he was a member of, among others, one of several support groups that enabled Scott and four companions to advance to the geographic South Pole. In 1932 he went into retirement and then lived in a house in his birthplace Hambledon, which he named after a after a cape in Antarctica Minna Bluff.
