William Lee (bishop of Waterford and Lismore)

William Lee ( born December 2, 1941 in Newport, County Tipperary ) is an Irish clergyman and retired bishop of Waterford and Lismore.

Life

William Lee, the eldest of five children of John and Delia Lee in Newport, attended in his school days, the local Convent of Mercy, and the Boys' National Schools and then the Rockwell Colleg. Lee studied Roman Catholic theology and philosophy at St Patrick 's College in Maynooth. On June 19, 1966 Lee was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. Then he studied canon law in Maynooth and was founded in 1969 to Dr. theol. doctorate. He also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Lee was appointed after the end of his studies as professor of philosophy at St Patrick 's College, Thurles, which he was president from 1987 to 1993.

On 27 May 1993, Lee was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. His predecessor, Michael Russell gave him on 25 July of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Dermot Clifford, and the apostolic nuncio in Ireland, Archbishop Emanuele Gerada.

On October 1, 2013 Francis Pope accepted his resignation.
