William Leete

William Leete (* 1612 or 1613 in Dodington, Huntingdonshire, England; † April 16, 1683 in Hartford, Connecticut ) was an English settlers in America and Governor of New Haven Colony from 1661 to 1665 and the Colony of Connecticut from 1676 to 1683.

Life

William Leete, son of John Leete and Anna Shute, daughter of John Shute, a judge of the King's Court was to 1612 or 1613 i Dodington was born. He trained as a lawyer and was an official at Bishop 's Court in Cambridge. His dislike regarding the oppression of the Puritans through the courtyard was a key factor for his emigration to Connecticut. He was town clerk 1639-1662 (town clerk ) of Guilford, Connecticut. He was also there in 1642 held the office of justice of the peace. He was also the 1651-1658 magistrate of Guilford and 1643-1649 deputy of Guilford, New Haven Colony Court Leete was 1655-1658 Commissioner of the New Haven Colony. Subsequently, he was from 1658 to 1661 and Vice Governor from 1661 to 1664 Governor of New Haven Colony. After the merger of the New Haven Colony with the Colony of Connecticut, he was later governor of the Colony of Connecticut, where he held the office 1676-1683. He was the only man who had held the post of governor in both colonies, New Haven and Connecticut.

William Leete died on April 16, 1683 in Hartford and was buried in the Ancient Burying Ground.

Family

Leete was married three times. His first wife and the mother of probably all of his ten known children was Anna Payne, daughter of Reverend John Payne from Sothoe. They were married on August 1, 1636th Anna died on September 1, 1668th His second wife, whom he married on April 7, 1670 Sarah, widow of Henry Rutherford was. She died on February 10, 1673 or 1674th His third wife was Mary, widow of Francis Newman and the Rev. Nicholas Street. She survived him only briefly. She died on December 13 in 1683.

Suspicion
