William Rubén Martínez ( born January 13, 1928 in Pueblo Victoria, Uruguay; † 28 December 1997) was a Uruguayan football player.
Club career
The defender played in his youth first Sportivo Alba and moved in 1942 to Nacional. The Youth Department of the Bolsos he belonged to until 1946. In the following years he was then from 1948 worked for Rampla Juniors, where he played in the foreground. 1955 Martínez moved to Peñarol, where he received the jersey back number 2 and after he left in the championship years of 1958 to 1961, the year the club again, the Aurinegros captained. During this time Güiyam celebrated, as he was called, his greatest successes at club level. Overall, he was with his team whose captain he was, four Uruguayan national champion in a row ( 1958-1961 ). National
Martinez graduated from its debut on April 7, 1950 against the Chilean selection until his last mission for Celeste on May 30, 1965 against Venezuela during the World Cup qualifiers for the 1966 World Cup total of 54 caps for his country. He scored twice in the opponent's goal. Two more matches on March 18, 1956 against Argentina and on January 9, 1965 against the GDR do not count as official internationals, since the former was organized by the players' union and in the latter the B selection Uruguay took.
Martínez participated in the World Championships in 1950, 1954 and 1962. The first World Cup appearance was at the same time the most successful, because on this occasion won the tournament and Uruguay Martínez was able to celebrate with the world champion title of the most important win of his career. However, he was not used in the course of the World Cup and was only represented as a substitute in the squad of Uruguay. During his second World Cup tournament in Switzerland Martínez was then a regular player of Celeste.
In 1953 he was also the squad Uruguay to the Campeonato Sudamericano to unn arrived there in five games for use. Also in the South Championships 1955 and 1956 they were among the Uruguayan squad.
