William N. Oatis

William Nathan Oatis ( born January 4, 1914 in Marion (Indiana), USA; † 16 September 1997) was an American journalist.

He studied one year at DePauw University, then worked in Marion for the Leader Tribune and began in 1937 at the Associated Press in Indianapolis. In 1942, he joined the army, where he mainly studied Japanese.

On June 23, 1950, he came ( from London) in Prague, where he took over the office of the Associated Press. In the summer of 1951, he was sentenced to ten years for alleged espionage. Shortly after the death of Joseph Stalin and an angry letter from President Eisenhower, he was released in May 1953.

Until 1984, he worked again with the AP in Indianapolis, New York, London and Sofia.
