William Painter (author)

William Painter (c. 1540 in Kent, † February 14, 1594 in London) was an English writer in the Renaissance.

Life

Painter had to matriculate in 1554 at St John 's College (Cambridge). In 1561 he was Feldzeugmeister in the Tower of London. Although the misappropriation of government property was accused ( 1586), he was not pursued. Painters fame rests mainly on his work " The Palace of Pleasure " ( 1566-67 ), a collection of classical and contemporary Italian and French love stories, which he translated into English and served the playwrights at the time of Elizabeth I as the source, including, among others, William Shakespeare.
