William Temple (governor)

William Temple ( born February 28, 1814 Queen Anne's County, Maryland, † May 28, 1863 in Smyrna, Delaware) was an American merchant and politician. He first belonged to the Whig party and later switched to the Democratic Party.

William Temple completed his schooling from Maryland and then moved to Smyrna, Delaware, where he struck a commercial career. In 1844 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware, 1845 to 1854, became a member of the Senate from Delaware. This he faced as president, as Governor Joseph Maull died on 3 May 1846. As previously Maull even after the death of his predecessor Thomas Stockton now had to Temple in the highest public office to move up, which he held until 19 January 1847.

Later William Temple was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States in Washington. Before he could officially exercise his mandate, but he passed away. The by-election for the seat was won by Republican Nathaniel B. Smithers.
