William Thierry Preyer

William Thierry Preyer ( born July 4, 1841 in Rusholme in Manchester, England; † July 15, 1897 in Wiesbaden ) was an English physiologist. He was the first many years Professor of Physiology in Jena, who could shape the professional Physiology at the University of Jena strongly.

His name is the introduction of an experimental- scientific education of students in the lecture, the introduction of seminars in physiology, the systematic involvement of students in research activities and the constant struggle to connect to a teaching and research findings customized structural design and science and technical infrastructure of the Physiological Institute. Preyer's scientific work by Charles Darwin and his teaching was marked. Of importance to the present are his two major works, " The soul of the child " and " Agreed physiology of the embryo ." These child psychology and developmental physiological studies Preyer contributed significantly to the scientific foundations of modern developmental physiology and developmental psychology.

Preyer did not want to be understood only as a matter of university science. The " Referierabende " in Jena were an opportunity to discuss scientific issues with representatives of other disciplines. In Berlin, he campaigned for a popular form of scientific representation and represented this view as Head of the Department of microscopic Urania.

2007 was presented for the first time named after him William Thierry Preyer - Award at the 13th European Conference on Developmental Psychology in Jena to the Turkish scientist Cigdem Kagitcibasi.
