William von Eggers Doering

William von Eggers Doering ( born June 22, 1917 in Fort Worth, Texas; † January 3, 2011 in Waltham, Massachusetts ) was an American chemist. He was professor of organic chemistry at Harvard University and former dean of the chemistry faculty.

Life

From Eggers Doering graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1938 and a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1943 ( for working with Sir Reginald Patrick Linstead ). After that, he was instructor and later associate professor at Columbia University. 1941/42, he worked for the military research at Harvard and from 1943 at Polaroid. 1947 to 1959 he was head of research at Hickrill Chemical Research Foundation. From 1952 he was a professor at Yale University and in 1967 returned to Harvard, where he was Mallinckrodt Professor from 1968. In 1986 he retired and had an honorary professorship at Fudan University in Shanghai.

From Eggers Doering - published 1939-2006 significant work on quinine ( formal total synthesis with Robert B. Woodward ), carbenes, non- benzenoid aromatics, tropylium ions and Cope rearrangements. In the eulogy for his decisive contributions Welch Price were honored to basic aspects of physical organic chemistry and his pioneering work on carbenes. According to him, the Parikh -Doering oxidation is named.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
