William Whittingham

William Whittingham (* around 1524 in Chester, † June 10, 1579 in Durham ) was an English Reformer and Calvinist theologian.

Life

William Whittingham was educated at Oxford and fled from Queen Mary Tudor to Frankfurt am Main, where he became friends with John Knox. He remained with Knox in Geneva, but he came back to England in 1560 to become Dean of Durham Cathedral in 1563. Whittingham was Calvinist and pulled to the attacks of the Archbishop of York. Whittinghams greatest achievement was the publication of the Geneva Bible ( 1560); a collaborative effort in which he was the driving force.
