William Woods (congressman)

William Woods ( * 1790 in Washington County, New York; † August 7, 1837 in Bath, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Woods received a limited education. In 1813 he moved to Bath in Steuben County. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice in Bath. He sat in 1823 in the New York State Assembly.

As a result of fragmentation of the Democratic-Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Adams - Clay Group. He was elected in a by-election in the 28th electoral district of New York in the 18th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of William B. Rochester. His seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, he took on 3 November 1923. He retired after the March 3, 1825 out of the Congress.

After his conference time he went back to his work as a lawyer after. Between 1827 and 1835 he was Guardianship and restructuring judge in Steuben County. During this time he was sitting again in 1828 in the New York State Assembly. He died on 7 August 1837 in Bath. His body was then buried at Grove Cemetery.
