Willie Fernie (footballer)
William " Willie" Fernie ( born November 22, 1928 in King Lassie; † July 1, 2011 in Glasgow ) was a Scottish football player and coach. He was as a player of the Scottish national team in the squad at the World Championships in 1954 and 1958.
Career
Fernie first played in his hometown of King Lassie Hearts. In 1949 he moved to Celtic Glasgow, where in the following years he distinguished himself as a flexible player and various game positions occupied. In 1954 he took the Scottish Double with the team and was subsequently nominated for the World Cup squad in 1954, after he was in the last preseason game against Finland for the first time accrued for the " Bravehearts ". He was among the 13 players who began the journey to Switzerland, but dropped out after two defeats at the end of the group stage. 1956 and 1957 he won the Scottish League Cup two more titles with Celtic. In the meantime, irregularly taken into account in the national team, he was in the 1958 World Cup once again in the 22 player squad comprehensive and was once again one of the 13 players who traveled to Sweden. Fernie left Scotland in 1958 and joined the English club Middlesbrough FC. However, after two years he returned to Celtic and played another season for the club. From 1963, he was briefly at each Partick Thistle and Alloa Athletic under contract before he trailed off in the Scottish Non- League football at FC Fraserburgh, in Ireland at FC Coleraine and Northern Ireland, the Bangor FC his career.
In 1967 Fernie, the coach of the reserve team of Celtic Glasgow, a position he held until 1973. He then coached FC Kilmarnock, with which he ascended to Division One in 1974. After relegation in 1977, started with the aim of promotion to the season, failed start of the season, after which he was relieved of his duties. Then he left the football business and worked as a taxi driver in Glasgow.
