Willy Haas

Willy Haas ( born June 7, 1891 in Prague, † September 4, 1973 in Hamburg ) was a German journalist, film critic and screenwriter.

Life

Willy Haas - son of a Jewish lawyer - studied law and was a friend of Franz Werfel, Paul Kornfeld and John Urzidil ​​at a young age and had personal dealings with Franz Kafka and Max Brod, whereby its sustainable became interested in literature. This circle, which met in Prague Café Arco, also scored Ernst Polak, husband of Milena Jesenská.

From 1911 to 1912 was produced in Prague in the publishing house of Johann Gottfried Herder Association a year of Herder- leaves, whose editor Willy Haas and Norbert were Eisler. After the First World War Haas went to Berlin, where he ( The Joyless Street ) and film critic worked (especially for the Film-Kurier ) next to the editorial work as a screenwriter. Together with Rowohlt 1925 he founded the weekly newspaper The literary world.

When in 1933 his Berlin home was searched several times, he emigrated to Prague, where he worked as a newspaper editor, among other things, for the Prague press. Founded by himself in Prague literary magazine world in the word had to cease publication again soon for financial reasons. After the German occupation of Prague in 1939, he first went to Italy and from there to India where he worked as a scriptwriter for at least two Indian films of Mohan Bhavnani. A regular income he earned in addition to working as a censor for the British Army in India. After the war he returned to Germany in 1948 and lived in Hamburg. There he was active among other things for the world and the world on Sunday as well as other magazines, newspapers and the radio. With his work for the world and the world on Sunday he wanted to help " restore the unity of the German literature ." From 1998 began the world with the Saturday supplement The literary world continues the tradition of the literary weekly paper of the Weimar Republic.

Haas was 1919 to 1921 with the translator Jarmila Ambrožova, from 1924 to 1936 with Hanna Waldeck (a son, born 1925 ), married in 1947 with Herta Doctor.

  • Franz Werfel put his childhood friend Willy Haas in his last novel Star of the Unborn with the figure of " BH" a literary monument.
