Willy Köstinger

Wilhelm " Willi" Köstinger ( born December 14, 1940 in Innsbruck, † January 7, 2014 in Seefeld in Tirol ) was a former Austrian skier, who was active in the Nordic combined and ski jumping.

Career

His international debut as a special Köstinger Springer at the Four Hills Tournament 1959/60. However, He only played both competitions in Austria. After Rank 34 in Innsbruck, ranked 20th in Bischofshofen, he finished second in the overall standings Rank 41st in the following year at the Four Hills Tournament 1960/61, he could not improve his performance, but started for the first time in all four competitions. In the end, he stood on the 30th place of the tour overall standings. His best tour he played the following season with the Four Hills Tournament 1961 /62. Although he came again no jumping into the top 20, but reached in the overall standings with 21 Place the best overall result of his career. In the following Nordic World Ski Championships 1962 in Zakopane, he reached the finishing sixth in the individual Nordic Combined competition. After it in the Four Hills Tournament in the next two years went downhill for Köstinger, he started in the Olympic Winter Games 1964 in Innsbruck only in the combination. After jumping he was still on a promising fifth place, but could only enter the 18th in cross country skiing. So he reached the tenth overall in singles.

In his last tours 1964/65 and 1965/66 respectively Köstinger started only at a jump and ended the tours to the places 74 and 95 in the overall rankings. After he crashed at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1966 and injured it, he had to end his career.

At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in 1976 in his hometown of Innsbruck Köstinger said the Olympic oath of functionaries.

Until his death he lived in Seefeld in Tirol.

Köstinger was the son of the combiner Wilhelm Köstinger, who raced at the Olympic Winter Games in 1936.
