Willy Wellens

Willy Wellens and Kresten Bjerre

Willy René Josephina Wellens ( born March 29, 1954 in Diest ) is a former Belgian football player and coach.

Playing career

Wellens began his career at Lierse SK 1972. After two years in Lier, he moved to Brussels to RWD Molenbeek. Wellens 1975 Belgian champion with the RWD and left the club in 1978 in the direction of Standard Liege. In his farewell 1981 in Les Rouches he won the Belgian Supercup. This year Wellens signed a contract with FC Bruges. In five years in Bruges, he won the Cup and the Supercup in Belgium in 1986. In this year of success Wellens moved on to Antwerp Beerschot VAV for, but could gain from this date no more titles. 1989-1990 he played one year in the KV Kortrijk and in the season 1990/1991 he returned to the RWD Molenbeek. From 1991-1993, he was at Cercle Bruges under contract. In the 1993/1994 season Wellens left his career at KRC Mechelen bar.

International players career

Wellens took part in the European Championships in Italy in 1980 and has been with the team vice European champion. Overall, he ran seven times for the Belgian national team.

Coaching career

Wellens took over as coach in 2004 when SWI Harelbeke, where he remained until 2006. In the 2006/07 season he coached the Belgian first division side KV Oostende.
