Wimborne Minster

Wimborne Minster is a small town with about 6,500 inhabitants in the southeast of the county of Dorset in southern England. The city is the administrative center of the District East Dorset.

Location

Wimborne Minster lies at the confluence of the rivers Stour and Allen five miles north of the big cities Poole and Bournemouth.

Economy

In previous centuries, the city was a trade, craft and service center for the farms in the region whose main source of income was the sheep. In Wimborne Minster Today it houses the headquarters of Cobham plc, a major UK aerospace and defense company.

History

The foundation of a convent in the woody and then probably only sparsely populated region of the St.. Cuthburga was around the year 705 by the burial of Ethelred, the brother of the King of Wessex Alfred the Great, the abbey came to royal honors. From Norman raids is not known, but destroyed the Danes in 1013 parts of the abbey buildings. Due to the Norman conquest of England ( 1066) also Wimborne Abbey came to enjoy a modern administration ( Doomesday Book) and a contemporary architecture, because from 1120 to 1180 was the old abbey church again. It is assumed that by then had formed a village close to the abbey church, which has been constantly increasing in the subsequent years. 1496 an accessible for anyone school was opened in Wimborne Minster of Margaret Beaufort; about 1686 followed one of the first public libraries ( chained library) in the country.

  • Interesting and attractive is a visit to the gardens and the house of Kingston Lacy ( four kilometers north-west ). The centerpiece of the garden is a in 1827 here from Egypt obelisk transported.
