Winchester Palace

Winchester Palace was a palace in Southwark, London today, south of the Thames. Built in the early 13th century residence of the Bishop of Winchester was one of the most magnificent buildings in the London region. After a major fire in 1814, it is now only preserved in ruins. These lie in the vicinity of the later built Southwark Cathedral.

Southwark was at the time of the palace building is the largest city in the Diocese of Winchester and was close to the City of London and Westminster. The Bishop Henry of Blois had built the palace to have a residence for his activities in London. The building was 300 years as a residence in use. In the English Civil War it was used as a prison. In the 17th century there was a division into several tenements and storage building.
