Winchuck River

The Winchuck River is a short river in Oregon in the United States, which flows through the Siskiyou National Forest to the Pacific Ocean. From its origin near Elk Mountain, the river flows steadily westward and opens at the Crissey Field State Recreation Site in the sea, about a kilometer north of the State Border between Oregon and California, about eight kilometers south of Brookings. The origin of the name is uncertain; maybe it is in Winchuck an expression from the Chinook jargon for windy water, as stormy waters. It is also possible that the name is derived from the local indigenous term for a woman.

It is formed in the south of Curry County from its East Fork and Bear Creek. Directly below it opens on the left side of Salmon Creek, followed by the right Elk Creek and Deer Creek. Further down stream it to each of the left, Moser Creek and South Fork Winchuck River. The river then leaves Oregon for a short distance and runs within the Del Norte counties in California before the river to Oregon returns. The Winchuck River crosses under just before its confluence with the Pacific U.S. Highway 101 The Winchuck River Road runs along a large portion of the flow curve parallel to this on the north bank.

In the main branch of the river live the king salmon and silver salmon, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. The fishing on the river is limited, especially in the lower reaches.

The forests in the catchment area of the river include different vegetations. including Douglas fir, Oregon maple and arbutus, typical of the Southern Oregon Coast Range, the Siskiyou Mountains and the coastal redwood zone. Most of the remaining redwood forests of Oregon are within the catchment area of the Winchuck Rivers.
