Winfried Denk

Winfried Denk ( born November 12, 1957 in Munich) is a German physicist. 2003, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize he was awarded.

Life and work

Think studied physics with emphasis Biophysics, first from 1978 to 1981 in Munich, then to 1984 in Zurich, where he graduated. His doctoral studies, he graduated to 1989 in Ithaca, New York and spent his postdoctoral period in Rueschlikon, Switzerland, at the IBM Research Laboratory before joining Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, changed. Was Winfried Denk at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, where he headed the Department of Biomedical Optics, 1999. Since September 2011 he has been director of the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried and head of the Department electron - photon - neurons.

Thinking which focuses on the development and improvement of microscopes. His two-photon microscope presented here is a breakthrough because, better results can be obtained with this microscope, with significantly lower energy consumption. The multiple quantum method, which is based on his studies allowed, for example a better decoding of moving picture on the retina. Currently thinking is busy trying to reduce its microscopes. Especially the Brain Research expects this new wide-ranging intelligence.
