Winifred Asprey

Winifred " Tim " Asprey Alice ( born April 8, 1917 in Sioux City, † 19 October 2007) was a US- American mathematician and computer scientist. She was one of only 200 women who were awarded in the 1940s, a Ph.D. from an American university. She was involved in the establishment of contact between IBM and the Vassar College, a U.S. elite high school in Poughkeepsie.

During her studies at Vassar College, she met Grace Hopper, that can gradually led later to the computer science, while at the Asprey participated "Universal Automatic Calculator " project in Philadelphia.

Life

Asprey was born in Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents were Gladys Brown Asprey Asprey and Peter Jr. She had two brothers: Chemist Larned B. Asprey (1919-2005) and military historian and author Robert B. Asprey ( 1923-2009 ).

Academic career

Asperey earned her Master of Science degree (1942 ) and her Ph.D. (1945 ) and the University of Iowa. Later she taught for more than 38 years of mathematics and computer science at Vassar College. She was from 1957 until her retirement in 1982, Head of Chair of the Department of Mathematics.
