Winisk River

The Winisk River is a river in northern Ontario, Canada.

It has its origins in Wunnummin Lake and flows to Lake Winisk. From there it flows in a northerly direction to Hudson Bay. The Winisk River is 475 km long and has a catchment area of ​​67,300 km ². The river's name is derived from the Cree word for " woodchuck " from.

The river is secluded and is not accessible by road. Only a few settlements are located along the river: Wunnumin Lake First Nation ( on Wunnummin Lake ), Webequie ( on Winisk Lake ) and Peawanuck ( about 30 km upstream of the mouth ). The river is characterized by strong currents. At the transition from the Canadian Shield to the Hudson Bay lowlands are whitewater sections. Subsequently, the Winisk River widened.

Winisk River Waterway Provincial Park

Much of his stretch of river between Lake Winisk and Polar Bear Provincial Park was declared a Provincial Waterway Park. It is a park without infrastructure. There are no fees and no visitor facilities.
