Winooski is a city in Chittenden County, the State of Vermont in the United States with 7267 inhabitants ( according to the census of 2010). It is located in the vicinity of the largest city in Vermont, Burlington, and between the cities of South Burlington, Colchester and the Essex Junction Village. The total population in this metropolitan area of around 85,000 people (as of 2010), and thus about 15 % of the total population of Vermont. The city is located about four kilometers east of Lake Champlain on the banks of the Winooski River and about three kilometers north- west of the Burlington International Airport.

The city was named after a place name in the local Abenaki, which means something like: "Where the Wild onions grow ".
