Winspit

Winspit is an old limestone quarry near Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset on the south coast of England. In this quarry, no longer rock is broken down.

Winspit is directly south of Worth Matravers on the English Channel, just northeast of St Alban 's Head (St Aldhelm Head ) and about 6 kilometers southwest from Swanage.

From Orcombe Point at Exmouth in the west to the Isle of Purbeck in the east to a coastal strip, which was declared as the first natural landscape in England by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site stretches. Winspit is part of the Jurassic Coast, it is one of the natural wonders of the world and is known for its fossils.

Until about 1940 Winspit served as a quarry for the production of Purbeck stone for large buildings in London. During the Second World War was the site of the radar site for the sea and air defense. After the war, the underground quarry was opened to the public.
