Winston Lord

Winston Lord ( born August 14, 1937 in New York City ) is an American government official and diplomat. He was president of the Council on Foreign Relations (Eng. " Council on Foreign Relations " ) in the period from 1977 to 1985.

Lord in 1972 was a key figure in the re-establishment of U.S. relations with the People's Republic of China. From 1969 to 1973 he was a member of the National Security Council in the planning committee. He was an advisor to the National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, whom he accompanied on his trip to Beijing in 1971. The following year he was a member of the U.S. delegation to President Nixon's trip to China. Lord was later (1973-1977) Director of Policy Planning and top adviser to the U.S. State Department in matters relating to China, U.S. Ambassador to China (1985-1989) and Secretary of State ( Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ) in the first term of President Bill Clinton.

Biography

Lord is the second of three sons of Oswald Bates Lord (1903-1986) and his wife Mary Stinson Pillsbury (1904-1978), a granddaughter of Charles Stinson Pillsbury, founder of Pillsbury Company. The parents were married in 1929 in Minneapolis. His older brother Richard died in 1935 at the age of three months. His younger brother Charles Pillsbury Lord. His mother was from 1958 to 1960 delegates at the General Assembly of the United Nations and from 1953 to 1961 Representative of the UN Commission on Human Rights (UN Human Rights Commission ). She was also awarded the Freedom Award by the International Rescue Committee. 1935 survived Mary Pillsbury Lord with her sister the Decline of the American passenger steamer Mohawk, in which 47 people died.

Winston Lord is married to the Sino- American author and human rights activist Bette Bao Lord since 1963 and has a son and a daughter. He graduated from Yale University in 1959 successfully ( magna cum laude) and was recorded at this time also in the Yale fraternity Skull & Bones. He received the Master of Arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1960. Moreover he got from the Universities of Williams College, Tufts University, Dominican College and Bryant College each awarded an honorary doctorate.
