Wintek

Wintek is a Taiwanese manufacturer of components for smartphones, which is specialized in the manufacture of touch screens, among others, for the Apple iPhone. The company was founded in 1990.

History

Wintek was founded in 1990 and produced in China, Taiwan, India and Vietnam.

Business

In 2010, Wintek achieved total sales of EUR billion converted 1:55. This is a growth of 133 % over the 2009's sales of 667 million euros converted. By 2013, Wintek expects annual growth of 25 to 30 % in the touchscreen saved.

Criticism

In May 2010, workers poisoned by a chemical called n- hexane, which is used to clean the display. Because it evaporates faster than alcohol, the production process is accelerated. The workers wore numbness in hands and feet and it suffered from fatigue. 137 employees then had to be hospitalized. Some employees had to stay up to six months in the hospital. Wintek paid comparatively high amounts of compensation to workers who voluntarily left the company in order not to have to bear the cost of treatment.
