Wirtualna Polska

Wirtualna Polska is one of the largest and most prominent web portals in Poland. It was founded in 1995 by Leszek Bogdanowicz and is considered the first portal in the country.

According to a press release dated January 2005, the site has had approximately 6.1 million users in October 2004 and thus occupied the second position in Poland behind Onet.pl ( 6.8 million users). Third place went to Google with about 5.5 million users.

In the Web portal, a search engine is integrated. WP also acts as an Internet service provider and offers, among others, services such as hosting, Internet access, e -mail account.

Before the parliamentary election in 1997, Poland has the portal together with the editors of the newspaper Rzeczpospolita and the Technology Center Centrum nowych Technologii presentations of the parties and the 7000 candidates, discussions in a web forum, and then a virtual test election organized. This action was accompanied with great interest by the Polish mass media. It is considered the first Internet election in Poland. With 867 votes cast, the simulated result from the real election result was far away. For example, the Freedom Union ( Unia Wolności pl., UW) scored in the test vote 41.5 % of the vote, but in the real election only 13.37 %.
