Wisch (Gelderland)

Wiping was a municipality of the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

Wiping had 19 573 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2003). Capital was Varsseveld. On 1 January 2005 wiper was merged with Gendringen the new municipality of Oude IJsselstreek.

Wiping was eponymous for the rule of wiping. The Lords of wiping originally ministeriales of the Bishop of Münster and came from wiping Billerbeck. They erected around 1330 a small rule in Gelderland whose residence wiping the old castle and later the Kasteel wiping was first in Terborg ( Gelderland). 1539 brought Irmgard of wiping the rule in her marriage to Georg von Limburg- Styrum one. In 1700 the rule was sold by the Counts of Limburg- Stirum to the House of Nassau - Siegen.
