Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft

The University Press ( WBG; until March 1955 Scientific Book Club ) is a German publisher in the legal form of economic association in accordance with State Award of the State of Hesse. § 22 sentence 1 BGB. The place of business is in Darmstadt. With around 130,000 members (as of 2012) is one of the WBG to the largest book clubs in Germany.

History

The WBG was founded in 1949 at the instigation of the former Nazi historian Ernst Anrich by German scientists as a club to remedy the lack of scientific literature and to give to others because of their involvement in the Nazi regime away from the universities scientists a field of activity. You should not just lay new publications, but also reprints of standard works that were not easily available in the postwar period. The founding members included, among other things, the philosopher Wilhelm Weischedel.

Publisher Profile

Today, the WBG works from some 20 scientific disciplines, which are sold direct mail to members of the WBG and to a lesser extent through booksellers laid. About a third of the publishing program consists of reprints of scientific works by other publishers.

Since September 2007, the WBG also distributes books from other publishers from their own program areas as Modern Antiquarian. In December 2008, the WBG took over the Hörbuchverlag auditorium maximum. The audio book program appears under this name since then and covers all areas of the program book. Under the name Lambert Schneider Publisher appear as an imprint in the WBG since 2010 diagnosis of the times non-fiction, literary classics and title to the cultural and intellectual history.

Copyright dispute with Google

In May 2006, the WBG sought with the support of the Association of German Book Trade an injunction against Google Book Search. The lawsuit was withdrawn because the competent court of the Hamburg Regional Court could see no violation of copyright.
