Without You (Badfinger song)

Without You is a song by British group Badfinger, the on their album No Dice appeared in 1970. It was written by the band members Peter Ham and Thomas Evans. Another song of the same name had been in the 1950s, a hit for Eddie Fisher and 1961 for Johnny Tillotson.

Harry Nilsson heard the piece, as he listened to records with a friend, but did not register immediately that strong in the song impressing upon him the " You". The next day, Nilsson called his friend to inquire about the performers of prediction that it must have been a Beatles title. 15 people then searched unsuccessfully in plates of the Beatles and also the British band grapefruit before someone came up with the correct name " Badfinger ". While a renewed Listen was disappointing for Nilsson, but his producer Richard Perry strengthened his desire to record the song in a separate version.

Nilsson's version of Without You was released in 1971 on the album Nilsson Schmilsson with Gary Wright on piano, Klaus Voormann on bass and Chris Spedding on guitar. The album was Nilsson's greatest success achieved in the U.S. album charts and was listed # 3 46 weeks in the album charts. The song Without You was a number -one hit in the UK and the U.S., where it could be for four weeks at the top of the charts and has sold over one million copies. Nilsson was awarded a Grammy. The Melody Maker named the piece for record of the year 1972.

In 1993, the song has been covered by Mariah Carey. He appeared on their album Music Box, which held eight weeks at the top of the U.S. album charts. Without You became her biggest hit in Europe, where he led the charts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in 1994.
