Witmarsum, Santa Catarina

Witmarsum is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. It is located about 110 km from the Atlantic coast near the city of Blumenau.

The city was founded in 1924 by three German immigrants (Paul Zerna, August Langhorst and Helmuth Teosowski ) founded from the former German colonies in Africa and initially received therefore the name Nova África.

1930 attracted many German Mennonite from Russia and Ukraine in the colony. In honor of the Baptist leader Menno Simons named this the colony around after his birthplace Frisian Witmarsum.

After the colony in 1954 received the status of a district, she was appointed on 15 June 1962 on the city.

The city now account for about two-thirds of their income with the production of agricultural products ( especially milk, molasses from sugar cane, wine and pork).
