Witsum

Witsum (Danish: Vitsum, Frisian: Wiisem ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein.

Geography

Witsum lies in the west of the island of Foehr on the edge of the southern island shore roughly along pulling Geest strip above the Godel lowlands.

Within the municipal territory is located with the almost eleven meters high Sylvert one of the highest points of the island country. For this reason it is said: What is the Mount Everest of the whole earth, which is the Sylvert for our dear island of Foehr. Due to its location the holms Langeneß and Hooge and Amrum are visible from Witsum out on a clear day.

At the Godel, the only river in the island, which flows south-east of the town center between salt marshes in the North Sea, breeding many species of seabirds. Among them are migratory birds.

History

Witsum was first mentioned in 1509. As part of Westerland Foehr Witsum belonged to the royal enclaves and was the Kingdom of Denmark directly belonging, whereas the claimant country Foehr Wyk with the Duchy of Schleswig belonged. Only after Denmark lost Schleswig to Prussia came Witsum 1864 Schleswig -Holstein.

Witsum and the neighboring communities Utersum with today's district Hedehusum voted as the only municipalities in the second zone in the referendum in 1920 mainly in Denmark; because they were not right on the border later, but they remained in Germany.

Municipal council

Since the municipality has less than 70 inhabitants, it has a community meeting place of a municipal council; these belong to all citizens of the community.

For the 2013-2018 parliamentary term, the municipal assembly Cornelius Daniels has been re-elected mayor.

Economy and infrastructure

For the economy of the town is tourism central. For holiday guests, a number of holiday houses and apartments available.
